The city of Ragusa is getting ready to celebrate the festival in honor of the patron saint, San Giorgio.
The festival always takes place on the last Sunday of May, and this year the program runs from the 29th to the 31st. During these three days, the statue of the Saint (kept inside the Cathedral that, on this occasion, is decorated with red damask drapes and floral arrangements) and the Holy Ark (which contains the relics of Saint George and other saints) are carried in procession through the streets of the city.
On Sunday, the most anticipated day, the morning kicks off with celebratory bell ringing and cannon shots.
In the afternoon (only and exclusively this afternoon), visitors can admire the beautiful original main door of the Cathedral of San Giorgio, which is decorated with delicate bas-reliefs depicting the story of the patron saint. The work is so delicate that it is kept inside the dark green door that we normally see when passing in front of the church.
As evening falls, the highlight of the festival takes place as the bearers carry the statue of San Giorgio to Piazza Duomo, where it is made to "dance" to the cry "Tutti Truonu!", The festival concludes with fireworks set to music.
