The Insabbiata defines Ispica’s identity, blending creativity, tradition, community participation, and a deep connection to the local area. Each edition is unique, every artwork is one-of-a-kind, and community involvement is central to its charm. It is a grassroots event born from the passion of young people and a desire to tell the city’s story through an artistic medium that is both simple and incredibly powerful: sand.
The 2026 Insabbiata in Ispica promises to be one of the most distinctive and rich editions in recent years. From July 15 to 19, Piazza Sant’Antonio Abate will transform into a true open-air art gallery for five days, where colored sand becomes the medium, paintbrush, and voice. The square—which served as a filming location for the Taviani brothers' movie Kaos—will fill with shapes, faces, symbols, and messages that engage in a dialogue with the Baroque architecture and the history of the neighborhood.
This year’s theme, Banksy – The Art of Social Commentary, makes the event even more significant. The artworks will draw inspiration from street art and its messages of social critique: the contradictions of the present, reflections on freedom, and perspectives on the contemporary world. It is a way to bring not only beauty but also food for thought to the medium of sand.
The event is conceived and organized by the young members of the Insabbiata Cultural Association, which engages volunteers, artists, and residents every year in a unique ephemeral art project. The artworks remain visible for only a few days: they come into being, enchant the viewer, and then vanish, leaving behind the memory of fleeting beauty and a collective effort that unites the entire community.
The event will be further enriched by evening gatherings, tastings, local crafts, and entertainment—perfect opportunities to enjoy the square long after the sun goes down, and to close the experience with a deep connection to the life and spirit of Ispica.
